Tuesday we started digging in front of #7 approach. Most all of you are familiar with this soft spot. It's not a coincidence that this is also the area where all the traffic is concentrated as golfers go to 8 tee. In fact, it's because of this concentration of traffic that this area is compacted and draining poorly. As you can see by the picture below, we have excavated all the compacted soil and replaced it with straight sand. We'll let this sand settle over the weekend and sod the area next week.
This next picture is a great shot of the guys sodding the area on #11 which is done as of today. Again, it is not a coincidence that this is also a traffic area. Every golfer, including every speed cart, power cart, pull cart, and every machine in the Green Department fleet must pass through this narrow area on #11. Because of this concentration of traffic, it is a challenging area to keep in good condition any time of year.
This last picture shows that we have almost used all the fine fairway turf from 12 fairway, so if we are going to continue repairing wet areas, we will need to decide what fairway we will shorten up in order to get more sod.
